Deep Point from Brentland
Three distinctive points mark the Eastern shore of the Port Tobacco River. The Southern-most is Chapel Point, next to the North is Deep Point, then Fourth Point. I have tried in this series of paintings to have at least one painting that shows each point and one that shows all three. In this painting a small brig, possibly from the Scottish port of Glasgow, is sailing North. The ship has passed Chapel Point and is approaching Deep Point on its way to an anchorage near Warehouse Landing. I imagine a date around 1750 when ocean going vessels could still venture closer to the town of Port Tobacco. There is a light breeze, and a redwing blackbird, the bird featured on the Port Tobacco River Conservancy Logo, is perched on a reed in the foreground.
